It’s What Are You Reading Wednesday once again!
It’s been a while since I read a thriller like this. I’ve been reading quite an eclectic mix of everything this year, from Always and Forever, Lara Jean to Stephen King’s It. The book I’ve been reading this week reminded me of books like I Let You Go, The Girl on the Train, and Murder on the Orient Express. But with that said, I thought The Girl on the Train was overhyped and I actually preferred the movie (I know, I know, what kind of bookworm am I?!), and this book definitely wasn’t as good as I Let You Go or Murder on the Orient Express.
So, what is this mystery book I’ve been reading, I hear you ask? Well, read on to find out! 😀
What I’m reading
The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware
Well, I’ve actually finished it now! But I haven’t started anything else yet, so this works, right?!
Why did you pick it up – cover or content?
Content, definitely. To be honest, when it’s a thriller/mystery, it’s usually about the content as the covers are tend to be fairly generic and bland! The cover on this does the job, but it wouldn’t be one I’d be tempted to “cover buy”!
Who’s your favourite character so far and why?
I think my favourite character from the whole book was the main character’s boyfriend, Judah. I found everyone else pretty bland if I’m honest. Lo, the main character, was quite erratic and I struggled to relate to her, and the host of other characters on the boat were fairly boring or unlikeable. I thought Cole and Ben had the chance to be fleshed out into more in-depth, developed characters, but it didn’t happen. The only character who seemed genuine and likeable was Judah, who we only see in flashes! That said, there was a character towards the end of the book that I ended up liking. I’ll leave you to work out who!
Will you finish this one?
I have! I feel like in a book like this, you have to finish it, as otherwise you don’t get to the twist and therefore you can’t really judge the book!
This book reminds me of…
I touched on it above, but the whole being-trapped-on-a-form-of-transport-potentially-with-a-killer-at-large thing definitely gave me Murder on the Orient Express vibes, but it wasn’t quite as sophisticated.
It reminded me of The Girl on the Train a little bit just because – to be blunt (ha, like Emily Blunt, who plays the main character in the film!) – both protagonists spend a lot of time drunk, and I thought both were overhyped! That’s not to say I thought they were bad; I just didn’t think they were that good.
What kind of read is this? (Slow but interesting, can’t put it down…)
A mixture! It really pulled me in at the very start, then it seemed to go off on a tangent for a bit which made the events of the first chapter seem irrelevant, then it hooked me again, then went a bit flat! It was a bit of a rollercoaster for me.
I found it had some good bits that I couldn’t put the book down during, but then it also had a lot of random threads that were dropped in and not woven into the story, so when I finished, I thought back and wondered why they’d even been put there in the first place. It felt a bit rushed to me, and like the author was trying to weave in too many plot lines.
Also, towards the end of the book, I started to find it a bit too much. Thrillers are thrilling because you feel like they could happen so you end up inadvertently putting yourself in that situation, and there were certain things that happened in the big climax towards the end that just had me rolling my eyes about how unlikely the events would be. I also found the ending itself somewhat unsatisfying – it kind of told you something to give you closure about something else, but then opened another door that no answers were behind!
I’d give the book a ★★★ out of 5!
